The Molinari Quartet’s 9th International Composition Competition is entering a crucial phase! The date limit of April 1st 2024 to receive the applications is past and the Quartet has received no less than 111 new scores from 33 countries. The variety of styles of the new works reveals the fundamental place the string quartet occupies in new music today.

The names of the four winners will be announced on May 24 during the Molinari Quartet’s « New Era » concert at the Conservatoire de Montreal.

The winners will be invited to come and work with the musicians in Montreal prior to the Dialogues and the Winners’ Concert to be held on September 27 2024. After the performance, the jury, comprised of the musicians of the Quartet and composers Michel Gonneville and Nicolas Gilbert will deliberate to determine the order of the winners.

The renowned Viennese publisher Universal Edition offers a free evaluation of their works to all 111 participants enabling them to access the scodo* publishing tool. Also, the four winners will receive a free one year subscription to scodo, worth 900$ (600 €) on top of sharing the 6000$ prize money. The First Prize winner shall also receive a silkscreen by renowned Canadian artist Guido Molinari generously offered by the Guido Molinari Foundation.

The Competition invited composers of 40 years or less to submit an original work for string quartet of a maximum of twenty minutes before the April 1st 2024 deadline.
