Based on the strong links of contemporary dance and classical music, performed by the Molinari Quartet, Les corps avalés is a moving human odyssey where the sensitive intelligence and the great musicality of choreographer Virginie Brunelle is spotlighted.
The Molinari Quartet performs excerpts of quartets by Górecki, Shostakovich, Glass and Barber among others during the stunning dance movements.
East European music is often influenced by regional folk music. Bartók and Janáček’s string quartets are good examples of this folk influence with their dancing momentum.
The musicians will also perfom Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi’s String Trio. This work will be recorded shortly to complete the CD box set of the complete string quartets by Scelsi on ATMA Classic label.

Ce concert propose les quatre oeuvres gagnantes du 8e Concours international de composition du Quatuor Molinari. Sélectionnées parmi les 115 partitions reçues de 33 pays, les oeuvres inédites seront créées lors de ce concert.
Oboist Vincent Boilard of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, joins the Molinari Quartet for a concert of quintets for oboe and string quartet. The four works to be heard are by Canadian composers.
This concert is part of the series « Ensembles en résidence » of the Montreal Conservatory of Music.
In preparation to the May 20 concert, the musicians invite you to a musical workshop in order to discover the works that will be played during that concert. The Quartet will play excerpts of the works and the public is invited to discuss with the composers Antoine Bareil and Christopher Goddard about the inspirations and secrets behind their new works.
The Molinari will also analyse and play excerpts of Shostkovich’s Quartet no.14.

The Molinari Quartet is very proud to present the world premiere of Le grand rétro, the first string quartet by its violinist Antoine Bareil. Inspired by his numerous musical experiences and his prolific imagination, Bareil’s Le grand rétro outlines a musical path throughout different styles. The Molinari Quartet will also premiere the first string quartet by Canadian composer Christopher Goddard, who is one of the winners of the 2018 Graham Sommer composition competition.
To close the concert, you will hear the very elaborate string quartet no. 14 by Dimitri Shostkovich.
This concert is organised by Schafer’s widow Eleanor James and Soundstreams with the collaboration of Grace Church-on-the-Hill and the Canadian Music centre.
To pay tribute to Schafer, Soundstreams’ Founding Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney has put together a small sample of Schafer’s masterworks to be performed by some of Schafer’s long time collaborators and friends.
The Molinari Quartet is the guest of the Luminato Festival to celebrate R. Murray Schafer’s legacy.
The Quartet will perform on the stage at Yonge-Dundas Square at 7pm a concert of 45 minutes of Schafer’s string quartets.
