SUMMARY:Dances
DESCRIPTION:Entitled Dances\, the December 1st concert presents works that are full of vitality and movement. Composer Franghiz Ali-Zadeh says that dance is very present in her native Azerbaidjan and marks all the important events of life\, should they be happy or sad. Reqs\, which means dance\, evokes the rhythms and inflections of Azerbaijani dances. Dance motives and rhythmical impulses are very present in Béla Bartók’s music and his 4th Quartet is a good example of his force full music. With its multiple inspirations and origins\, the Quartet in G by Claude Debussy is a unique work that reaches beyond any frontiers. \n  \nFranghiz Ali-Zadeh : Reqs (Danse) \nClaude Debussy : Quartet in G \nBéla Bartók : Quartet no 4 \n  \nTickets are 12\,50 $\, 24\,50 $ and 29\,50 $.

SUMMARY:Nature in Canadian String Quartets
DESCRIPTION:The Molinari Quartet present a concert at Array Space in Toronto. The theme of the concert is nature in Canadian string quartets and features two works by R. Murray Schafer that are directly inspired by nature. \nWritten in 1976\, the Second quartet was inspired by the work of the World Soundscape Project in which Schafer studied the acoustic phenomena of natural and urban environments. This quartet is subtitled Waves\, and depicts the rhythm of the breaking and backwash of the waves on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Canada. \nWinter Birds\, Schafer’s Tenth quartet\, is an attempt to suggest\, in the compressed form of a string quartet\, the night and morning of the winter soundscape outside Schafer’s window in central Ontario\, with its birds and animals. \nThe Molinari Quartet will also perform Quinsin Nachoff’s virtuosic and rhythmically engaging String Quartet No.1 \n  \nThis concert is made possible thanks to a grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec\, diffusion hors-Québec programme.

SUMMARY:Transparency
DESCRIPTION:The Molinari’s celebrate Montrealer Brian Cherney’s 80th anniversary by premiering his 7th string quartet\, especially written for them. Cherney’s music is always very sensitive and full of subtleties. Thomas Adès’ second string quartet\, Four Quarters is divided in four movements that each represent a time of day. From the transparency of harmonic sounds to intense pizzicatos\, the composer plays around with complex rhythms without ever hindering the beautiful sounds of the work. To close the concert\, the stately second quartet by Benjamin Britten carries us away with its warm lyricism and its chacony\, which he wrote to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Henry Purcell’s death. \n
